About Leather is Fine

Leather is fine workshops leather bags, backpacks and accessories are skillfully handcrafted by Povilas Žičkus, a Leathercraft hobbyist in the town of Kaunas in Lithuania. Every piece is individually made using mindful, slow and centuries-old hand leatherworking techniques – this means no machinery at all, just a simple selection of well-crafted and sharp hand tools.

By entirely handcrafting all of the pieces going out the door and experimenting with centuries old leather crafting techniques the bags and other accessories are cathartic to touch and smell, chemical-free, long lasting and durable.

Leather that I use

Vegetable Leather
Vegetable tanned leather refers to the tannage, or method of tanning the cowhide into leather. It’s called “vegetable” because of the natural tannins used in the tanning process like tree bark. Vegetable tanning or veg tan as it’s sometimes called, is one of the oldest methods of tanning known to man. It has literally been around for centuries. But less than 10% of the world's leather is tanned this way today.
What makes vegetable tanning so unique is it can be used to make thicker leather and results in more body and character - perfect for bag making. Vegetable tanned leather also tends to age better and develops a rich patina over time. And it has that awesome classic leather smell.
The other unique aspect of vegetable tanned leather is that it can be dyed, wet formed into a variety of shapes, embossed, or even hand carved, to have the details that make the product truly yours.
Chrome tanned leather
When it comes to chrome tanning, the number one reason people use chromium salts is because this speeds up the tanning process, and the tanning itself can be done in less than a day. Probably, 80% or more of the leathers today are chrome tanned and because of that, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the quality spectrum and the difference in the hides is much bigger for chrome tanned leathers than it is for veg-tanned leathers.
While its easy to assume that veg tanned leather is always superior to chrome tanned leather, I urge you to not take this as a fact because there are pros for using Chrome tanned leather as well. Chrome tanning allows you to end up with leathers that are really thin, soft and flexible and it is naturally a little more water repellent than a veg-tanned leather. Chrome leather also typically holds color much better, is more colorfast and you can also have a much larger range of brighter colors versus veg-tanned leathers.
Crazy Horse Leather
Crazy Horse Leather is a unique leather type that undoubtedly stands out from the rest and its name comes from the leather that is used for the creation of horse saddles and which is also known as Saddle Leather. Crazy Horse Leather is actually made of the highest quality full grain cowhide which guarantees that it will withstand many years of use and abuse. Full grain cow leather is the strongest and most durable leather, which implies that it will only intensify its wonderful charm over time.
Crazy horse leather starts by taking a 100% natural cowhide of the utmost quality. The leather is then treated by applying a special type of wax to a full grain cowhide surface that has been polished and softened, which gives it particular qualities and characteristics that are different from any other type of leather.
